Thanks for Taking Care of Scooter

Doug and Charlie Burhoe at Burhoe’s Automotive Service Center LLC are the caretakers of my little boy car “Scooter.”    They’ve been at 75 Old Windsor Road in Bloomfield, CT since 1962.  Well, actually dad’s been there that long, Charlie came on a little bit later.

I find the father and son shop to be honest, caring and committed to their customers.  They often run with a full load of cars to repair every day.   That says something – if you may at times have to wait a day to get your car in, that means they’re popular and they’re good because people wouldn’t go some place repeatedly if they didn’t like it.

To me, an artist is someone who experiences life in a certain way.  They continually hone their gifts and their skills.  Doug, the father, used to race cars when he was younger.  He made every effort to understand the mechanics and the working of all of his vehicles.  That previous experience landed him in the right place.  He opened up a repair shop.

My dad used to fix cars.  Anybody and everybody came to him – “Hey, Mr. Nelson, could you take a look at my car for me?”  It was never a problem.  They’d put up the hood and my father would begin tinkering.  Then he would go into the house and come back out with his toolbox.  If he didn’t know what the problem was, he’d tell them to come back in two days while he studied the problem.  He would make a quick trip to Sears and buy the manual with all of the diagrams for the car.  He’d sit and study for a few hours and have the solution when the person came back.

In my mind, that takes a great deal of skill, patience and something else -  a desire to understand something and a commitment not to give up.  That was my dad.  I miss him.

Doug Burhoe has those qualities like my dad.  I watch him as he examines my car and can see his mind ticking.  I can see the kindness in his face and feel confident that I am in the presence of an artist, someone who is genuinely interested in resolving the problem versus someone who is interested in making money by resolving the problem.  Certainly, it is important for him to make money, but that’s not where he’s coming from.  His mindset is totally on finding a solution and crafting repairs on the vehicle.  He’s an artist.  And his son, Charlie, likewise.  The apple did not fall far from the tree.

So, if you happen to be in Connecticut and in the general Bloomfield area and need work done on your car – Burhoe’s is the place.  Scooter and I highly recommend them!
